[I] Uberwald Dibbler? [message #20011] Do, 21 April 2005 22:52
Daibhid Ceannaideach
I was idly googling when I came across a post back in '98:

http://google.co.uk/groups?q=&selm=obVVJDAQ%2BgT2Ew8y%40 unseen.demon.co.uk

In which Pterry says:

>There is no Dibbler in Lancre because, since Lancre is in many ways
>connected to A-M, it shares the same 'Dibbler Space' -- but, yes, of
>course there will be a Dibbler in Uberwald (I've already written him
>in)...

Apparently he fell out again. If Pterry's reading, is he still planned for
a later appearance?

Based upon upcoming books it doesn't look like anyone will be in
Ubervald in the next couple years, unless there's some bit in Thud
where someone boards a carraige bound for A-M, but not before picking
up a rat-on-a-stick for the road.

I wonder about the prospects of a Koom Valley Dibbler in Thud.

Admittedly my favorite Dibbler books are those where he is involved
intimately in the plot.

In Uberwald, where fat is a natural resource, he would probably sell healthy
snacks. Hmmm...I wonder what he would be called?

Bite Me Own Neck Dibbski?
Stake Me Own Heart Dibbula?
Remove Me Own Brain Dibblor?
Dr. Von-Organize-My-Own-Mob-Of-Angry-Villagers-Dibblenstein?

Any other suggestions?

Au contraire! He'd be frying things in the lowest grade substance
which had been somewhere in the vicinity of fat, at some point in time.
Such is the way of the Dibbler, one could be surrounded by the finest
pigs on the cloven foot and still employ only the most suspicious bits
and substances.

Sounds like a winner, but he'd have to be selling something vampirical
in nature, no?

Wasn't there a Dibbler-esque character in TAMAHER?

I'll check that, but I have vague recollections. Not that is was Uberwald,
per-se, but it was up in the mountains, right? or am I just misremembering?

I'm afraid so. It *was* in Uberwald, but it didn't have a Dibbler,
although it did have a Sergeant Doppelpunkt and a Corporal Knopf...

Well, despite my misremembering, it deserves a re-read. I'll finish "the
truth" (for about the fourth time) tomorrow, and TAMAHER is next (reading 2)

Actually I feel rather inferior having such low stats on the recent books.
What're the reading stats for everyone else here? Moving Pictures, which I
bought over ten years ago, is my most battered book, probably 15 reads - I'd
be interesting to see how many re-reads everyone else here has done...

I couldn't possibly put a figure on it. I would guess that I read a DW
book about once every two weeks - and have done for several years.

I'd say about once a month. I think I probably haven't reread the recent
stuff *quite* as often as the earlier ones, but that's just because I
haven't had as long to do it in 8-)...

I'd assumed that they were more Uberwald versions of Nobby and Colon.

Yeah, there's a Colenesque and Nobbski (descriptions, not names I think) in
The Fifth Elephant.

Doppelpunkt is German for Colon, Knopf is not German for Nobbs but it's
German for something that comes close. German is the language mainly
(ab)used to make Uberwaldian

I had been patiently waiting for Detective Dikken Darm to appear, and then
we got Doppelpunkt instead.

Now I'm picturing the Nobbses in Ask The Family. I hope you're willing
to pay my psychiatrist's bill, 'cause my brain needs washing after that.

Maybe you should just ask how many times people WOULD reread if they
could. For example the books that I have on my shelf have been reread a
few times, the ones in the library only when they reappear. They're
almost always borrowed out. But the ones I've taken out of the library
most often, which probably counts for more than just taking it off my
shelf, are the watch books. Definitely.

No, Doppelpunkt and Knopf were from Bad Blinz (Blintz?) in TAMAHER.
